The Power of the 10-10-10 Rule
The 10-10-10 rule, popularised by author and speaker Suzy Welch, is a simple but effective decision-making technique that can help us gain clarity and make better choices.
Here’s how it works:
When faced with a decision, ask yourself how you’ll feel about it 10 minutes from now, 10 months from now, and 10 years from now. By considering the short-term, medium-term, and long-term implications of our decisions, we can gain perspective and make more thoughtful choices.
For example, if you’re debating whether to take a new job that offers a higher salary but longer hours, ask yourself how you’ll feel about that decision in 10 minutes (you might feel excited and eager to take the job), 10 months (you might feel overwhelmed and stressed by the long hours), and 10 years (you might regret sacrificing your work-life balance for a bigger paycheck).
Using the 10-10-10 rule can help us avoid impulsive decisions and short-term thinking, and instead make choices that align with our values and goals. It can also help us prioritise what truly matters in our lives.
To make the most of the 10-10-10 rule, try writing out your options and the short, medium, and long-term implications of each. You might also find it helpful to talk through your options with a trusted friend or mentor.
In a world where we’re constantly bombarded with decisions to make, the 10-10-10 rule can be a powerful tool for helping us make choices that lead to greater fulfillment and success in the long run.
